I’m not ready…
Have you ever caught yourself saying (or heard someone say) something along the lines of “I’m not strong enough yet to join a Bootcamp class.” or “I need to get in shape first before I try group training.”?
Let’s pause for a second.
When you read those phrases out loud, do they sound as ridiculous to you as they do to me when I hear people use it as an excuse as to why they aren’t trying something new or getting started? Yah, I said it – an excuse. Because let’s face it: that’s what it boils down to.
Hard truth coming up: No one feels that they are completely in shape when they start a new fitness program or physical activity. Even those who feel like they are already in shape still struggle when they introduce something new or different into their fitness regimen. They often try something new for the experience or fun of it, or to feel like a part of a community or social event and challenge their abilities and bodies in a different way. But quite often, the main reason why people join a new fitness class or program is because they don’t feel in shape and have a desire to change that. The reality is that even in a class of 30 people, everyone has a different reason for joining, and continuing to participate.
Second hard truth of the day: What you might really be saying is “I am scared of stepping out of my comfort zone and landing in a place where I might not be able to keep up, or feel judged by those who can.”
Am I right?
Newbies or veterans to fitness, we all feel that fear and unfamiliarity at one point or another when we start something new or try a new class with complete strangers. But the reality is, people are so busy focusing on what they’re doing and trying to reach their own goals, that they don’t have enough time to look around and evaluate your abilities. The right class celebrates a newbie for walking in the door and giving it a go. And a newbie doesn’t look down at the veteran either.
This fear might be rooted in the way you see yourself or might be based on your past experiences. I get it! I too have walked into those classes and have felt like it was the first day of high school, and all eyes were on me. It is important to give something another try until you find what fits for you, your goals and abilities. Something that provides a healthy mix of motivation and encouragement for you to safely and comfortably step out of your comfort zone. That is the class or group you want to invest in. They aren’t all created equal. And yeah, I know that television has given the word “Boot Camp” a bad rap. To me, Bootcamp refers to a style of fitness class, and does NOT mean demeaning or putting down an individual for their abilities or pushing someone beyond their limits. It should not be ‘in your face’, single you out, do-it-or-die. I mean, we have enough struggles with accepting our bodies and our worth to have an hour of that kind of aggressive, drill sergeant, make-you-feel small approach. There may be some you encounter that are like this, but like I said, they aren’t all created equal.
But you will never know that unless you get rid of those thoughts of needing to be ‘ready’ or in ‘shape’ before joining in. That is why these groups and classes exist, to help get you there!
But then again, you will need to accept being uncomfortable for a bit. Anything new always is.
If you feel judged or get that first-day-of-high-school vibe, then it might not be the right fit for you. Move on and try something else. Don’t push through. Exercise can be fun while still being hard work. Classes and groups can be extra motivating and provide you with the challenge you need.
So the next time you find yourself humming and hawing about trying a new class, dare to give it a go. Leave your judgements at the door, take a deep breath as you enter the space and smile. Accept that it may be challenging at first. Accept that you may be uncomfortable at times. But believe that everyone in there is on a journey of his or her own, much like you.
Only quit on a good day!
