Small things have big consequences. Over time, those consequences compound. We are an accumulation of our choices. Go to the gym? That choice is a moment that can change your day. Over time, that choice can change your life. We tend to ignore the importance of all the little habits that add up to big gains.
Making these little decisions have a snowball effect on other parts of our life:
Your health impacts your work and relationships.
It affects the way you feel in your skin and clothes.
All this impacts your happiness.
It is all interconnected.
The best investment you can make is IN YOURSELF.
Here are the six ways you can start focussing on yourself:
1. Physical Heath
Did you get the flu at the beginning of this year and then again? Brutal. If your health is out of whack, nothing really works. It’s frequently only during an illness that health becomes a priority. But isn’t prioritizing your health the best investment you can make? Investing in your health trickles down to other areas of life like your ability to handle stress, feel happy, feel healthy… I could go on.
Want to invest in your physical health? Look at your overall health, quality of movement, nutrition, sleep quality and stress levels.
On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current health status in these four areas?
What is one thing you can do in each of these four areas to move up the scale by one?
2. Sleep
Ever had a night of horrible sleep? How was your motivation and willpower the next day? Did you get your workout done? Did you make choices that fuelled your body with nutrients? And what about your stress levels that day? Overall, we don’t feel very happy those days and that influences our work performance, our overall health, our tolerance level… pretty much everything.
Are you making sleep a priority?
What about the quality of your sleep?
Do you have a good sleep routine?
3. Nutrition
Your body is an engine. Your diet is the fuel for your body to perform.
Lousy fuel equals lousy performance and poor outcomes when it come to your transformation goals.
In his book, How to Stay Motivated, Zig Ziglar asks a thought-provoking question:
“If you did have a million-dollar racehorse, would you let him stay up half the night drinking coffee and booze, smoking cigarettes and eating junk food?” You are that million-dollar racehorse.
How have you valued your body today? Lately? Ever?
How have you fuelled your body?
If I look through your fridge and cupboards, would it reflect the person you want to become?
4. Movement
Clients of mine recently went on a trip with their 70-year old parents. They posted pictures of them bungy jumping and zip-lining…at 70! That is the kind of senior I want to be. I want to have zest for life. And to do this, I need to stay mobile.
Have you invested in movement lately?
How mobile, flexible, and agile do you feel right now?
What physical activity do you want to do but have been putting off?
Are you currently making choices that align with the physically capable person you want to be? Do you take the stairs or the elevator? When you watch your kids soccer game are you moving or sitting the whole time?
5. Mindset
What happens between your two ears is one of your most priceless assets but is often the most neglected. Whether your goal is transforming your body, starting a new business, working on your relationship, or even managing money: it all starts by managing your psychology. Without this, you are just going through the motions. It’s no wonder we often revert back to old habits. We miss the fundamental step of examining our thoughts and beliefs. Happiness is a habit. It takes practice.
How do you recover when you experience a set back?
Are you spending most of your time in the lows or the highs?
Are you faced and overcoming the same problem over and over?
6. Learning
Pick up a book, read articles, listen to podcasts, have great conversations with others. Learn how to fuel your body the way that achieves your highest level of transformational success. Learn to move your body in ways that yield maximum results. Join a program that is teaching based instead of asking you to be a robot. Hire a coach that is invested in you and will accelerate your progress while making it manageable and sustainable. Pay for something so you have more skin in the game instead of piecing things together, finding cheap and free options. Invest in building your tool belt. Not with random tools but tools that push you to succeed. Invest in learning what challenges your current beliefs and thoughts about yourself, your body, your health.
What do you know about nutrition?
What do you know about exercise?
What do you know about your body and how it works, performs, and functions?
When you invest in each of these six areas, you feel better, have better relationships, and ultimately have reached success. Everything is interconnected and oozes into each other. Neglect one part and life feels out of balance and in turn, your happiness is affected. No one is perfect in managing all areas, but it is worth looking at the area you keep putting on the back burner or better yet buried in the back of the closet.
Could this be the reason why you aren’t achieving the weight loss, strength- body transformation- insert your goal here?
