Why Change Is So Dang Hard.

You say you want change, but are you willing to do the work?
You say you want your time and body back, but are you willing to put in the effort?
You say you want a healthy relationship with food, to work out more consistently, to manage your stress level and overall have a loving relationship with your body, but are you willing to do what it takes to get there?

It isn’t just about putting more hours in at the gym. It isn’t even about eating clean, eliminating foods, or following the latest diet craze.
Every corner you turn you can read up on how to eat properly, fuel your body for performance or work out with more intensity. You likely already know a few things about your body, your habits and have some understanding about what it takes in the kitchen and at the gym. You are willing to work in one way or another, from research and reading to joining a gym and starting clean eating challenges.
But I am not referring to that kind of work. The kind of work that I am referring to leads to lasting change and will be the fundamental reason your behaviours change for good. This type of work is worth your investment and time.
It is easy to be hard on ourselves for not being where we want to be with our goals, our life, our bodies. Some of us see these as failures. After all, we are hard wired to look for them and hold onto them moreso than lessons and gifts in every experience. You can easily get swept into the train wreck thought process of what didn’t go right, what needs fixing, what else you can do. This prevents us from getting what we really desire for ourselves.
It is easy to be ‘status-quo’. There is comfort in the same routine, same job, same group of un-motivated or derailed friends. It takes much more effort to form relationships, learn something new and reach out for help. It takes work to say no to the things, people and experiences that don’t offer what you need and want.
It is easier to see a life, a body and a world of have-nots than to practice gratitude or make small changes that lead to big results. It is easy to play small in your comfort zone and spend more time waiting for the right opportunity or ideal situation to take action. It takes work to show up everyday, ready to push yourself into growth.
Action comes in many forms. It’s more than a physical response, but a deeper level of work on the inside. All of those thoughts you push aside, the beliefs you don’t know exist and the emotions that you hide and eat to soothe. These thoughts, beliefs and feelings are where the real work begins and where change will come from. Until you adjust these elements, you will always have the same outcome.
I would argue that few people want the same setbacks, results and challenges in life. It’s not exactly a thrilling roller coaster ride we want to wait in line for.
Check in with your commitments. Will they help you to move forward, or do they keep you in a place that is easy, safe and comfortable?
Your self-care deserves commitment. Your goals deserve commitment. Your inner work deserves commitment. That is where you invest the work.
