5 Diet Pitfalls: Recognize when it is time to cut the cord

Even if you are not actively following a diet right now, if you have ever dieted then you may still be influenced by the ‘rules’ from those past eating regimens, as well as what others are eating, what your favourite celebrities are eating, etc. We are bombarded by ads and information that tell us what to eat, what not to eat, what is the latest quick fix approach and what you should be doing to lose weight and finally get your life on track.

No wonder people are so unhappy with their bodies. We attach how we feel in our own skin – how we move through life from shopping to walking to taking the stairs – to our overall relationship with food. Binge eating, categorizing foods as good or bad, feeling guilty when we indulge, feeling like we are in this alone, like no one gets it. Feeling like a failure.

This what I hear from many clients. They feel like they have tried it all, paralyzed by the fear of “Will this work?” “Will I fail again?”

Oh, do I get this. I have been there. It’s no lie that it can be a struggle to balance it all. Life around me keeps moving at a faster pace, asking more of me, so I am constantly juggling to keep the things I enjoy in life a priority. But at the top of the heap I am #1. Not because of ego but because I can’t begin to enjoy life and get things done without first taking care of me. Selfish? You might think so, but it’s not how I choose to view it.

It becomes harder and harder to prioritize ourselves if we feel like we are a failure or never good enough. A diet mentality does this to us. We all have the best intentions; no one wants to feel shitty or feel pushed aside, but we do it unknowingly. Little by little, over time we give over our power away to things like relationships or work or our children. Little pieces of ourselves, whittled away. We lose sight of where we are going and what we need out of our own life. Never questioning if we are happy with where we are, how we feel in our body, how we feel when we eat and how we feel when we move.

This is why I want to share my 5 reasons to stop dieting:

  1. Self-deprivation is a terrible idea. When we restrict, we want more of it. How many times can you keep saying “NO” to yourself?

  2. Diets don’t cater to your body. They don’t take into account your individual lifestyle, likes, dislikes, needs or training schedule and type.

  3. Diets aren’t sustainable. If they were, then people would just stick to one and would never need to do another one, right? But ask the person next to you how many diets they have been on.

  4. Diets produce more stress on the body

  5. Diets don’t improve your relationship with food over the long haul

If you are done with diets (and you should be), it might be time to consider a different approach that is sustainable and puts YOU first. There’s a reason clients reach a high level of success through our 12 month online coaching program. Because I was sick of diets. Everyone is sick of diets! There needed to be another option, something that would teach people actual skills in how to eat and work out. It’s actually possible to understand how to move your body with purpose and intention. How to nourish your body without points and rules and tiny frozen meals. How to bridge the gap between mind and body and really connect the two. Because the reality is, diets get you nowhere.

Cut the cord and instead focus on making a positive connection between you and food.

You’ll never look at another diet program again!
