What Your Gut Has to Do With Weight Loss After 40 (More Than You Think)

Can I ask you a question?
How do you know if your digestion is healthy?
Seriously.
Think about it for a second.
Most women answer that question the exact same way.
"I go to the bathroom every day."
Cool.
That tells me one thing.
You go to the bathroom every day.
It doesn't tell me how well you're digesting food.
It doesn't tell me how well you're absorbing nutrients.
It doesn't tell me if your gut is influencing your cravings.
It doesn't tell me if inflammation is running high.
It definitely doesn't tell me why you feel six months pregnant after eating a salad.
Going to the bathroom is one piece of the puzzle.
Not the whole picture.
Here's another sentence I hear all the time.
"I've always had a sensitive stomach."
"I've always been bloated."
"I've always had constipation."
Can I challenge that for a second?
Just because something has always been true...
doesn't mean it's normal.
It means it's familiar.
There's a difference.
When you were younger, your body had a lot more room to compensate.
You could rush through meals.
Grab whatever was convenient.
Sleep five or six hours.
Push through stress and bounce back a day later.
Your body picked up the slack.
Then perimenopause showed up.
Hormones shifted.
And suddenly all the little things your body had been compensating for got louder.
Here's where the perfect storm begins.
You're trying to lose weight using the same strategy you've always used.
Meanwhile...
your digestion has changed.
Your hormones have changed.
Your recovery has changed.
The way your body clears inflammation and excess hormones has changed.
Yet your weight loss plan hasn't.
That's why your gut suddenly becomes part of your weight loss strategy whether you planned for it or not.
Here's what fascinates me about the gut.
Most women think it's just where food gets broken down.
It's so much more than that.
Your gut is influencing how hungry you feel.
How satisfied you feel after eating.
Your cravings.
Your energy.
Your recovery.
Inflammation.
Even how your body communicates with your hormones.
That's a pretty big job for something most of us only think about when heartburn shows up.
Think about your own experience.
Have you ever eaten a perfectly healthy lunch...
only to find yourself wandering back into the kitchen an hour later looking for a little something-something?
Or maybe you've finished eating and thought,
"Why am I still hungry?"
Or maybe you've eaten healthy all day...
and still ended up bloated, dealing with acid reflux or feeling like your food was just sitting there.
…Your body is trying to tell you something.
This is where weight loss gets really interesting.
Most conversations stop at calories.
And yes...
calories matter.
But calories only tell you what went into your body.
They don't tell you what your body actually did with them.
That's a completely different conversation.
Imagine buying a week's worth of groceries.
You unload the car.
Half the grocery bags never make it into the house.
Would you say you bought enough food?
Absolutely.
Is your family actually getting enough food?
Not really.
Your body works a little like that.
Eating nutrients and using nutrients aren't always the same thing.
That's why you can be eating "healthy" on paper...
and still feel tired.
Foggy.
Hungry.
Inflamed.
Or wonder why nothing seems to be changing.
Before you spend another $80 on a probiotic, greens powder or the latest gut supplement making the rounds on social media, can I save you some money?
Supplements support a healthy gut.
They don't build one.
If your body is running on stress...
rushed meals...
poor sleep...
caffeine...
grazing all day...
and eating on the go...
adding a probiotic is a little like spraying air freshener in a room with a plumbing leak.
It might make things smell better for a while.
It doesn't fix what's underneath.
Your gut needs better conditions before it needs another capsule.
That's why the basics still matter.
Not because they're exciting.
Because they work.
Eating enough fibre.
Drinking enough water.
Chewing your food.
Creating some rhythm with your meals instead of grazing from morning until night.
Managing stress.
Prioritizing sleep.
Those things don't make flashy Instagram reels.
They also happen to be the things your gut has been asking for all along.
I know.
That's a lot less exciting than the latest "metabolism-boosting" powder or fat-loss hack promising to melt belly fat after 40.
But the basics have stood the test of time for a reason.
Here's what I hope you take away from this.
Your gut isn't just responsible for digesting food.
It's influencing your energy.
Your cravings.
Your recovery.
Your hormones.
Your inflammation.
And yes...
your ability to lose weight.
Which means if you've been focusing only on calories...
you may be missing one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle.
If this had you thinking, "I had no idea my gut had that much to do with weight loss," I think you'll really enjoy The Missing Link: Gut, Hormones & Weight.
Inside, I go much deeper into how your gut, hormones and metabolism work together, why so many women feel stuck even when they're doing "all the right things," and the practical shifts that actually help your body work better instead of simply asking it to work harder.
Because your gut isn't just where food gets broken down.
It's one of the biggest players in how your body feels, functions and responds during perimenopause.
And once you understand that, you start giving your body the conditions it needs to work with you again.
